English Translation

Out of my very torment, I said, “Welcome to your eyes, welcome to you, O my torment; welcome!”

Is my burning anguish for you not enough, despite how precious you are, that you go and step far away from my eyes, O beloved one?

Do you think that I am forgetful like you, while I—May God be your judge—am afflicted with deep passion for you?

Neither place nor time can offer me solace or comfort, No, nor can anyone other than you ever be my beloved, no, never!

My heart, which never yielded to anyone who sought it, swore total allegiance at the very first glance of your eye!

It has become your spring dwelling and your summer retreat now that everyone else has departed from its lands!

Explaining:

This song embodies the poetic essence of sweetly surrendering to love. The text opens by highlighting the paradox of welcoming torment (“Welcome, my torment”), then reproaches the beloved—who mistakenly believes that distance can bring solace or oblivion.

The meaning reaches its zenith in the final verse, where the poet declares that his heart—once haughty and resistant to the overtures of affection—instantly yielded to the sovereignty of the beloved’s gaze. Having cleared the heart of all others, he granted the beloved the right to dwell there permanently, through both spring and summer (“a place for spring and summer abode”).

Yā ‘adhābī… yā halā (Oh, my torment… welcome): A beautiful emotional paradox; the lover greets and welcomes the torment and longing because they originate from the beloved’s eyes, making the resulting pain sweet and palatable.

Sālin (Solaced/Forgetful): Derived from sulūw—meaning forgetfulness, distraction, or the fading of the pangs of love. The phrase “You think I am sālin” expresses disbelief at the beloved’s assumption that the poet has moved on or forgotten.

Allāhu ḥasībuka… mubtalā (God shall judge you… afflicted): Al-Ḥasīb refers to the Judge and the Reckoner. The term mubtalā signifies being stricken by the trial and anguish of love, with no means of escape.

Ta‘ahhada bil-walā’ (Pledged allegiance): Signifying a vow of fealty and absolute surrender; it portrays the beloved’s eyes as a captivating sovereign to whom the once-stubborn heart submitted, declaring total loyalty at first sight.

Marbā‘ wa-maṣīf (Spring and summer abode): Marbā‘ ​​refers to a place where one dwells during spring—amidst pasture and greenery—while maṣīf is a summer sanctuary. The expression implies the beloved’s complete possession of the heart and permanent residence within it, throughout every season.

Jalā (Departed): To leave, depart, or vanish. In other words, every other lover has departed from the abode of the heart and the pastures of my soul; nothing remains there but you.
