The Dignity of the Learned and the Folly of the Ignorant

It is not befitting for a scholar to always overlook the foolishness of the ignorant with forbearance, for this harms both parties: the scholar’s prestige is diminished, and the ignorant person’s ignorance is reinforced.

If you address the base (the lowly) with kindness and gentleness,
their arrogance, rebellion, and conceit will only increase.

Arabic Translation

لا يليقُ بالعالِم أن يَتجاوز عن سفاهةِ الجاهلِ بالحِلمِ دائماً؛ لأنَّ ذلك يَضُر بالطرفين: فتنتقصُ هيبةُ العالِم، ويترسخُ جهلُ الجاهل

إذا خاطبتَ الدنيءَ (السِّفلَة) بلطفٍ ولين
زادَ كِبراً وتَمرداً وغرورا

عالِم را نشاید که سفاهت از عامی به حلم درگذراند که هر دو طرف را زیان دارد: هیبت این کم شود و جهل آن مستحکم

چو با سفله، گویی به لطف و خوشی
فزون گرددش کبر و گردنکشی
