English Translation
This poem is actually a statement by Sheikh Saadi Shirazi in “Mystical Humanism.” In this text, Saadi deconstructs the concept of “humanity,” shifting it from the realm of form and clothing to the realm of spirit and essence, leading us to the ultimate goal: the station of witnessing, where the servant sees nothing but God.
The honor and dignity of the human body are contingent upon the spirit within it (the spirit of God). It is not ornate garments or fine clothes that bestow upon a person the true mark of humanity.
If the essence and reality of a human being were confined to their outward senses of sight, speech, and hearing, then what would be the difference between a living human being and a faded image painted on a blank wall (in the same form)?
Indulging in the pleasures of food, sleep, and falling captive to anger and lust is nothing but a clamor of ignorance and wandering in darkness. For the animal, by its instinct, is completely ignorant of that sacred realm which belongs exclusively to the perfect human being.
So strive, O children of Adam, to be truly and meaningfully human, otherwise, there are birds (like the parrot) that can mimic human speech, but they remain birds lacking the essence of understanding.
And if you are not a dignified human being, and you are content to remain a prisoner of your base desires, then know that the sacred station prepared for humankind (the vicegerent) is one that even the angels, despite their purity, cannot attain its path.
And if you can extinguish within yourself this instinct and the morals of beasts (getting rid of the attachments of the self and the love of this world, as if you were an animal), then your life will connect with the spirit of eternity, and you will live a true life, sustained by the soul from the Almighty Truth.
And, through his conduct, man reaches a station where metaphorical existence vanishes, and with his inner vision, he sees only God alone. Reflect on the immensity of this expanse and the sublimity of this human station, which has been bestowed upon you by God Almighty.
You have witnessed, with your own eyes, how birds soar in the horizon, so cast off now the shackles of base desires that bind your soul. To witness the true flight (ascension to heaven) of humankind towards the Kingdom of Heaven.
And I (Saadi) did not intend by this sermon to boast of my superiority or to demonstrate my eloquence in giving advice, but rather it is advice I have offered you, as we received these truths and admonitions from those in whom the meanings of perfect humanity were found.
Contextual and Mystical Notes
Essence and Accident (Ziba’s Garment): Saadi warns against “the worship of appearances.” In mysticism, the garment is “metaphorical existence” or worldly forms. Humanity is not a robe to be worn, but rather an inner illumination.
The Place of Humanity (Makan Adamit): Saadi refers to divine honor: “And We have certainly honored the children of Adam.” The seeker sees that the human being’s rank is higher than that of the angel because the human being bears the “trust” (consciousness and the capacity for choice).
Witnessed Unity (Be Jaz Khuda Naband): This verse is the essence of the love poem; it is an allusion to the station of “annihilation in Unity.” When the servant is purified from his “self” and from the “others of this world,” nothing remains in the mirror of his heart but the image of “the One/God.”
Ascension of the Soul (Flight): Flight is not movement in space, but rather a “journey and conduct” through the stations. The constraint of desire is the earthly gravity that prevents the soul from soaring in the sky of Truth.
Death of Inclinations (Daranda Khoyi): Death here is “voluntary death” (Die before you die). Eliminating animalistic traits (anger, lust) is a prerequisite for human rebirth.
This Sermon Means
The essence of humanity lies not in physical features or outward adornments, but in the sublimity of the soul and its transcendence of animalistic inclinations to reach the station of “witnessing,” where one sees only God. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it outlines the ultimate goal of human existence: “liberation from the shackles of lust” to achieve spiritual ascension. It affirms that humanity is a sacred station, the heights of which even angels cannot reach, and that whoever succumbs to the characteristics of beasts has strayed from their own path and lost the essence of their dignity.
