Transience of Matter and the Demise of the Powerful

True honor is sought only from God, the Most Generous and Loving

This Ghazal represents a moral and existential epic, in which Saadi links the honor of the soul to “sacrifice” and “submission to the Creator,” and presents a stunning visual vision of the transformations of matter and the demise of the powerful, reminding us that the earth we tread upon is but the remains of those who came before us.

English Translation

The honor of the human soul is contingent upon its generosity and selflessness, and its dignity is bound to its submission and prostration before its Creator. For one whose being is devoid of these two qualities, non-existence is preferable to existence.

O you who revel in the comforts of life and revel in the trappings of luxury, beware of being deceived by this world. It is impossible for immortality to find its way into this transient stage of existence.

And you who groan under the weight of poverty and lament your scattered circumstances, take refuge in patience (you must take the medicine of patience); for it is but a few days (two or three days, no more) until this affliction passes and this life comes to an end.

And tread gently upon the dust of this path and be dignified, for this very ground upon which your feet tread was once eyes, eyelids, cheeks, and towering figures.

For the sun that illuminates our world today is the same eye that shone long ago upon the dwellings of ‘Ad and the lands of Thamud, before annihilation claimed them.

Do you not see that the soil of Egypt, so soothing and delightful, is the same ancient soil, but it has become a shroud and dust that covered the heads of Pharaoh and his tyrannical soldiers?

So, my brother, this world is not worth an atom’s weight for people to envy each other about, neither the envied will remain in their bliss, nor will the envious one remain eternally in their misery.

Beware of devaluing yourself and diminishing your precious worth by indulging in sins and frivolous pursuits, if your belief in the Hereafter is truly sincere.

And if you are ever compelled to raise your hand in supplication and beg (asking others due to your inability), then raise it only to God (the Lord of Lordship), who alone possesses boundless generosity, mercy, forgiveness, and absolute love.

From the very dust of this ground to the highest heavens (the Pleiades), all beings are subject to the majesty of His servitude; and are preoccupied with His remembrance and supplication, some prostrating and others standing in awe of His glory.

And His (God’s) generosity knows no bounds, and His blessings are countless, and no one who sought his help was ever turned away from His door without attaining their desire and achieving their goal.

Saadi’s advice is nothing less than the key to the treasure of eternal happiness, but only those destined for happiness from eternity are granted the ability to act upon it.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Honor of Prostration and Generosity: Saadi connects social ethics (generosity) with spiritual connection (prostration). The perfect human being is the one who benefits creation and submits to the Truth.

The Alchemy of Annihilation (The Parts of Man in Dust): In this (fourth) verse, Saadi agrees with Omar Khayyam in his vision of “The Cycle of Matter.” Dust is not a degrading inanimate object, but rather a repository for the bodies of bygone beauty. The purpose is to break the pride of walking upon the earth.

Ad, Thamud, and Egypt: an invocation of the historical and Quranic symbols of the most powerful civilizations that rose and then fell. The sun is the only “cosmic witness” who saw the demise of the pharaohs and the permanence of the Creator.

The Value of the Soul (Qimet Khud): Sufis believe that the human soul is a “divine breath,” so it is a great injustice to sell this precious jewel for the paltry price of fleeting worldly pleasures.

The Paradox of Happiness (Saad and Masoud): A subtle interplay between his name (Saadi) and the concept of happiness (Saad). It emphasizes that guidance is a divine favor. The advice is there, but acting upon it is a blessing for those who are guided.

This Sermon means:

The essence of existence lies in realizing the transience of matter and the futility of striving over the fleeting pleasures of this world, and that true elevation lies in humility and seizing every moment in the pursuit of noble character. It is important for spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the station of “insight,” which sees death as a silent preacher that demolishes the pride of the ego, affirming that true honor is sought only from the Most Generous and Loving, and that one’s happiness is contingent upon the extent to which one is mindful of the Day of Judgment and rises above trivialities. Arabic Translation
