In these verses, the poet Nizam Ganjavi does not offer traditional praise of the Prophet PBUH, but rather crafts a “philosophy of prophethood” and the eternity of the Muhammadan spirit, employing the symbolism of letters and the wonders of nature to illustrate his place at the heart of existence.
The poet then moves from the eternity of the Muhammadan spirit to the perfection of his moral attributes, before soaring with us into the realm of the “Ascension” (Mi’raj), where the heavens bow in reverence, concluding with his own unique signature. Declaring his servitude and service to this great Prophetic station
English Translation
The first Tablet (the Preserved Tablet), on which the letter Alif — the beginning of creation — was inscribed, did not settle except at the special veil of Ahmad, the Prophet ﷺ.
That ring which represents “the Living” (the letter Ḥāʾ), and which the Alif granted dominion over the realms at the beginning, was adorned with a collar of the letter Dāl and wrapped with the letter Mīm, so that the structure of the Perfect Human, Ahmad ﷺ, was completed.
For this reason, from that Mīm and Dāl he drew the circle of absolute sovereignty and the straight line of perfection that is free of any flaw.
In this turquoise dome (the sky) he was like the fragrant scent of a fresh, green tree (the aromatic citron tree), a messenger in the palace of the highest Paradise.
And how strange it is in this world that this tree (the citron tree) first gives its fruit, and only afterwards comes the spring. In the same way, the Messenger of God, Muhammad ﷺ, was the fragrant fruit of existence that preceded the spring of all creation.
When he raised the banner of “I was a prophet” in the unseen realm of eternity, the Creator of the worlds entrusted the seal of the messages to him alone ﷺ.
The moon, which became like a gemstone set in the cryolite ring of the sky, received its honor only because it carried the seal of Muhammad ﷺ in its splitting (“The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split”).
The entire world carries the symbol of subordination to his Messenger through the letter Mīm of his name (as if it were an earring of allegiance that every servant places in his ear as a sign, so that the rest of creation may know he belongs to him). Indeed, the two abodes (this world and the next) are nothing but a single ring in the mihrab of submission to his command.
He is the dominant master of the land of Truth, and Jesus the Messiah is a follower in his presence. He is the bearer of glad tidings (Muhammad) to the nations, while Jesus is the one who gave glad tidings of his name (the coming of Jesus was itself a glad tiding of the coming of the Messenger of God Muhammad ﷺ after him).
He is the unlettered Prophet who spoke with the most eloquent expression, combining the Alif of Adam (when God sent Adam down to earth) and the Mīm of the Messiah when the latter announced his coming.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stood upright like the letter Alif (always erect) in keeping covenants and in faithfulness, and thus he became the first in rank and the last in the sending of the prophets.
He is the brightest point at the centre of the drawing of the heavens with the word “Be / and it is” (the creative word), and he is the most eloquent expression in every eloquent speech.
From the beauty of the speech of the Prophet of existence and the sweetness of his talk, literature gained its fame and renown; and from the measure of his uprightness the celestial sphere took its standard and its proportion.
Despite his lofty spiritual station, he never allowed worldly pride and arrogance to approach his soul, as kings and the wealthy do. He never adorned himself with the crown of kings mixed with injustice, never prostrated in this world to anyone except the Truth alone, and never turned toward the ornaments of this world and its mirage.
The people of purity and those protected from error and sin, as well as the near angels, are nothing but veiled creatures (barred from entering his sanctuary) in the precincts of his inviolable space. Indeed, immunity from error and sin itself was nurtured and raised in the school of his perfection.
The dust of the noble grave of the Prophet wipes away the sins of the eyes and purifies them, and his emigration (his departure from Mecca / the migration to Medina) is what wrested authority from the hands of the first Age of Ignorance. His silence is a speech that illuminates and delights the hearts, and his love is a medicine that purifies the souls and cleanses all faults.
The quenching of discord by his blessing ﷺ is something the hearts love, yet falling into “fitna” through the beauty of his character and person is something inevitable for everyone who sees him.
He was the supreme leader of every caravan and the source of every good; he was the firm, balanced pole who guided the souls of the wayfarers lightly toward the Truth alone (guiding them to Islam).
He is the divine candle that was kindled from the light of holiness in the niche of his heart, and he is the one who absorbed the lessons of existence from the eternity sunk in the ancient past to the endless future.
Even the eye of the sun is in need of his light ﷺ (the sun needs his light in order to shine upon all humanity), and the crescent of the sky is nothing but a trace left by the footsteps of his Buraq on the night of his Miʿrāj ﷺ.
On that blessed night (the Night of the Miʿrāj) he was the true king; it was as if he sat upon the throne of his spiritual sovereignty that no earthly king can approach. He was the bestower of thrones and the one who establishes kings in their positions (by his lofty spiritual rank — he is the true origin and giver of honor and sovereignty, and the crowns and thrones of kings draw their legitimacy and value from his light and blessing).
He is the one who expanded the tight breaths of the spirits by guiding humanity to Islam, and he is the one who guided his Buraq (managing the neighing of the Buraq with ease, as if it were a wild horse that cannot be controlled) so that he could fold the distances of the spiritual kingdom with the speed of lightning.
After his return ﷺ from the journey of the Miʿrāj, the armies of eloquence stood astonished, and the knights of speech held the reins of the horses of time (the piebald / a chariot drawn by black-and-white horses) in awe of his station and in readiness to serve him.
When the armies arrived, holding their purebred horses (the piebald of black and white color) to serve the Prophet ﷺ (after his return from the Miʿrāj journey), Nizami was honored to be the one who carries the saddle-cloth of the horses of his procession (his humble servant among all those who welcomed him).
Mystical and Sufi Dimensions
The poet begins his poem by talking about the status of the Prophet ﷺ before the creation of the material world. He describes him as the “citron” (or “otruj”) of Paradise, whose fruits precede the spring blossoms of the trees, an allusion to the precedence of his light over all creation.
He also connects the letters of his name (Ahmad, Muhammad) to the order of the universe, affirming that he is the “Seal” of Prophethood, foretold by Jesus Christ, peace be upon him.
Where the concept of “Truth” The Prophet is not merely a human being who came at the end of time, but rather the “point” around which the compass of creation revolves (the compass of “Be,” the instrument used by the Creator to draw the universe through the phrase “Be, and it is,” not the imperative form of the infinitive “كردن”).
The poet’s use of the letter “alif” as a symbol of integrity and loyalty demonstrates that the Prophet’s character is the supreme moral standard. The poet also sees that “submission” to this example is the essence of worship.
The Oneness of Beginning and End: When the poet says that he is the “first and last” of the prophets, he is referring to the hadith, “I was a prophet when Adam was between water and clay.” This means that his soul was the first of all beings (the First), and his body was the Seal of the Messengers (the Last).
The Secret “Be”: Describing him as “the point of the compass of ‘Be'” means that the divine will in creation made the light of the Prophet the center of this universe, for without him, meaning would not be ordered.
The poet believes that the secret to the future success of his book, “The Celestial of Secrets,” lies in the blessing of this description (mentioning the Prophet’s attributes), and he considers himself like “the ear of the world,” which does not Its beauty is found only in the service of the letter “M” in the name of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Prophet, for the poet, is “the supreme wisdom” that explains the secret of the letters “A” and “M” in the journey of humankind from Adam to Christ.
He describes the Prophet (peace be upon him) as the source of morality and cosmic beauty. The sun lacks his light, and the moon bows down to serve him. The passage concludes with a symbolic image of the Prophet’s procession, where the poet Nizami stands at the end of time to carry the “Ghashiya” (saddle cover), signifying his service to the Prophet’s biography through his poetry.
Here, Nizami presents the Ash’ari school of thought regarding seeing God with the “eye of the head” during the Ascension. He also clarifies that the Prophet is the “Pole” around which the spheres of meaning revolve, and that whoever desires “infallibility” must enter the sanctuary of his majesty.
The tone of “annihilation in the Beloved” is evident in these verses. The poet Nizami sees the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the “divine candle” (Sham’ al-Ilahi) by whose light hearts see. He also emphasizes that the Prophet learned the “lesson of eternity” before the creation of the celestial spheres, reflecting the theory of “Muhammadan Light” in mystical thought.
The conclusion with “Ghashih-Dari” (the service of the saddle) is the station of “artistic servitude.” The poet believes that the pinnacle of his literary creativity lies in serving the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The verses imply that the book “The Celestial of Secrets” was only opened through the blessing of being related to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The poet, Nizami, teaches the seeker that “literature” is the true fruit of closeness to the Prophet, and that whoever desires to attain a seat of truth on the “Platform of Ascension” must purify their “garden of composition” (their body) with love for the Chosen One.
