I waited expectantly for you until the sun set and disappeared.
I gathered all the heavy worries of the night and dragged them with my pacing footsteps all the way to the morning.
For your sake, I forgot all about tomorrow, while I continue to live only in yesterday.
So many of my tears ended up consoling other tears as I wept.
How many times did I try to distract myself and find solace, while the rest of the silent night remained completely indifferent
I played tunes of joy for you on the reed flute, but when I cried out in pain, my voice reached your ears as nothing more than a faint whisper.
O my tormentor, even if you were to say now that you are coming to keep your appointment, I have already forgotten to remind you at the birth of the sun.
In this masterpiece, Abadi Al-Johar embodies the tragedy of waiting and shattered promises. The song transports us to the psychological state of someone suspended in a temporal void, where the future stands still (“I forgot about tomorrow”) and the present becomes a monotonous repetition of pain. The song highlights the cruelty of the other’s silence and neglect, which transforms the lover’s resounding cries into mere whispers that go unheard. The poem concludes with wounded pride and a sorrowful surrender: even if the beloved decides to fulfill the promise now, the rising of a new sun (“The Birth of the Sun”) has already heralded the end of the night of waiting and the death of the moment when a reunion was possible.

الناي: the woodwind instrument known for its melodious, raspy sound resembling a human sigh. The use of “playing joyful tunes with the flute” represents a tragic irony; the lover is forcibly trying to play joy with an instrument inherently associated with sorrow.
يامعذبي: a tender plea to the beloved, for here the torment carries a bittersweet pleasure that the lover does not reject.
