Cultivating a righteous soul is better than corrupt worship

It reached my ears (Saadi) that a pious and righteous man had been playfully teasing a young boy and smiling warmly at him.

His companions, secluded in their hermitages (mystics, devoted to the worship of God), seized upon this act as an opportunity to criticize him and find fault with him, tearing at his reputation with backbiting and slander.

The news of this gathering (the slander of the pious and righteous scholar) did not remain hidden. The story was relayed to a man of insight and discernment (a wise and discerning man, knowing the right from the wrong), who delivered his decisive judgment on the matter, saying:

“Stop this slander!” Conceal the secret of this friend who is immersed in his state (intense worship, internally disturbed by intense attachment to the Creator), and do not tear the veil of his dignity; Gentle jesting is not forbidden in the scales of truth, but the backbiting you commit is certainly not permissible at all (indeed, it is inherently forbidden).

Contextual and Mystical Notes

“Falling into the skin of another” (dar postin eftadan): A very beautiful Persian metaphor repeated by Saadi, where he portrays the backbiter as a predatory animal that enters under the fur of its victim to devour its flesh. The mystical meaning here is that “seclusion” (khalwat-e nashin) without self-discipline is hypocritical seclusion. True worship is that which prevents you from harming others.

“Goodness dar barabar ghibat” (Jesting versus Backbiting): Saadi weighs matters on the scales of “spiritual jurisprudence.” Joking with children is a characteristic of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and a requirement of humanity (Mardami), while backbiting is a major sin.

Here, Saadi criticizes “rigid religiosity” that considers smiling a flaw and slander an act of piety and zeal for the faith.

A person of insight is one who is not blinded by appearances to the underlying meaning. In Sufi education, a person of insight is one who sees the intention of the doer before the action. He saw in the sheikh’s humor “mercy” and in the ascetics’ backbiting “cruelty and sickness.”

This wisdom from Saadi Shirazi in his book Bustan means that the true measure of piety is purity of speech and a sound heart towards others, not feigning rigidity and seclusion while indulging in the vice of backbiting. It is important in moral and social education because it shatters “behavioral hypocrisy” and demonstrates that gentle interaction with people is closer to the spirit of religion than the withdrawal that conceals a sick heart that backbites. It emphasizes that violating people’s privacy is a sin that cannot be forgiven by claiming righteousness.
