Excessive anger causes fear and terror (in others), and excessive kindness destroys respect and dignity (in oneself). So do not be harsh, lest they tire of you, nor too lenient, lest they become audacious towards you.
It is best to use both firmness and gentleness together (firmness/sternness and gentleness are necessary). Like a phlebotomy, one makes an incision to draw out the bad blood, and at the same time applies ointment (to heal it).
A wise person is not harsh from the outset (a wise person does not begin with harsh words), nor does one use excessive gentleness, which diminishes their own stature.
A wise person does not exalt themselves too much, nor does one stoop to humiliation, even once.
A shepherd, said to his father: “O wise one, teach me a piece of advice that will benefit me in my old age.”
He said to me: “Do goodness, but not to the point where a stubborn adversary dares to challenge you”

الغَضبُ المُفرط يُسبب الخَوف والرَعب (لدى الأخرين)، واللُطف المُفرط (الزائد عن الحدِ) يُدمر الرَهبة والكَرامةِ (للشخصِ نفسهِ)
فلا تكن قاسياً فيملّوا منكَ، ولا ليناً فيتجرأوا عليكَ
الأفضل إستخدام الشِدة واللينِ مَعاً (الشدة/القسوة واللين مَطلوبٌ)
مثل فَصادُ الدماءِ، يَشق جَرحاً لإخراج الدم الفاسد، وبنفس الوقت يَضع عليه مُرهماً (يداويه)
الحَكيم لا يكون فظاً منذ البدايةِ (الحكيم لا يبدأ بالكلام القاسي)
ولا يَستخدم الليونة المُفرطة، والتي تُقلل من شأنهِ
الحكيم لا يُعظم نَفسه كثيراً
ولا يَنحدر إلى الذلِ ولو لمرةٍ
راعٍ قالَ لأبيه: يا حكيماً
علّمني نَصيحةً تفيدني في شَيخوختي
فقالَ لي: أفعل الخَير، ولكن ليس الى الحد
الذي يتجرأ فيه عليك الخَصم العَنيد

خشمِ بیش از حد گرفتن وحشت آرد و لطفِ بی وقت هیبت ببرد، نه چندان درشتی کن که از تو سیر گردند و نه چندان نرمی که بر تو دلیر شوند
دُرشتی و نَرمی به هَم دَر بِه است
چو فاصد که جَراح و مَرهَم نِهْ است
دُرشتی نگیرد خِرَدمَند پیش
نه سُستی که ناقص کُنَد قَدرِ خویش
نه مَر خویشتن را فُزونی نَهد
نه یکباره تَن در مَذلت دَهد
شَبانی با پدر گفت: اِی خِرَدمَند
مَرا تَعلیم دِه پیرانه یک پَند
بگفتا: نیکمَردی کُن نَه چَندان
که گردد خیره گرگِ تیز دَندان
