English Translation
May any heart that does not love you wither and fall ill, and may any eye that does not desire you lose its sight.
O you who are as constant to my life as a tear clinging to a cheek, and who dwell in my soul like blood flowing through my veins.
O you who eternally occupy my inner being and my deepest sighs, O yearning wail of the reed flute in my wandering, lost years.
O lines of destiny etched where our hands meet, bridging the years of my past with my new life.
O nostalgic silence that speaks with the pure sweetness of honey, in the eyes of a night that bears witness to your spell.
Everything within me testifies to my love for you, for my heart has softened for you, though it was stubbornly resistant before.
Before I knew you, I was absolutely no one; but the day I beheld you, I became a living word and a beautiful poem.

This song explores the philosophy of union and existential transformation through love. The lover here is not seeking fleeting physical connection, but rather an identity for his soul. Through profound sensory and spiritual comparisons (tears on the cheek, blood in the vein), he affirms that the beloved’s existence is a prerequisite for his own. The final verse (“Before I knew you, I was nobody…”) represents a condensed summary of this spiritual experience; the divine beauty reflected in the beloved’s eyes is what gives the lover his voice and his worth, transforming the chaos of his former life into a sweet “poem and verse” brimming with meaning.

علّ قلب / علّ عين: “ʿill” (with a short “i” sound and a doubled “l”) appears here in the Hijazi and Bedouin poetic tradition as a form of supplication for illness, disease, or even death. The meaning is: “May every heart or eye that does not love or desire you be afflicted with illness, blindness, or disease”. It is an expression of devotion and absolute loyalty to the beloved.
مثل دمعٍ لخد: an image of eternal inseparability; for when a tear falls, it clings to the cheek, leaving its warm mark, just as the beloved is inseparable from the lover’s life.
كما الدم بوريد: the pinnacle of physical and spiritual fusion; for the beloved is no longer an external being, but has become the life that flows in the lover’s veins.
العمر الشريد: a metaphor for the years of wandering, dispersion, and spiritual loss before knowing and finding the beloved.
يا خطوط الغيب في يد ويدr: a brilliant and astonishing metaphorical image. It signifies the meeting of lovers’ palms and the intertwining of their fingers, as if the “lines of destiny” drawn on their palms were converging to forge a single fate written in the unseen.
يا حنين الصمت، ينطق بها شهد: the silence between lovers is not emptiness, but rather a silence charged with longing and a warm yearning that drips with sweetness like honey when translated by the eyes.
لان لك قلبي وهو قبلك عنيد: an admission of voluntary submission; for the heart that was defiant and stubborn before love softened and yielded willingly to the beloved’s charm.
كنت أنا ماني أحد / صرت أنا حرف وقصيد: the pinnacle of Sufi philosophy in love; the lover declares that before knowing his beloved he lived in a state of “non-existence” (no one), and upon seeing her, he was reborn as a being speaking of poetry and beauty (a letter and a poem).
