This text represents the pinnacle of “mystical Ghazal”; Where Kamal Khujandi blends the subtlety of feeling with the depth of vision, employing the symbolism of the “shirt” and the “green line” to paint a picture of divine manifestation that fills the horizons with fragrance and demands the offering of the soul as a sacrifice.
Since a whiff of the fragrance of your shirt wafted towards the gardens of the gnostics, the buds of flowers and the hems of hearts have been filled with the fragrance of this sacred union
And every tear in clothing can be mended with a thread, but the greatest wonder of all is that it is the captivating strands (threads) of your hair that have torn the pockets of dignity and bequeathed us this longing.
And no sooner had the table of your beauty been adorned with the verdant beauty of budding virgins (soft hair, a metaphor for verdure and mercy), than your ruby lips whispered a clamor and passion in the gatherings of beauty and the kingdoms of loveliness.
If you were to let your braids fall to your feet, heads would fall prostrate at yours, as from intense beauty of yours. And if you were to speak of connections, you would leave souls scattered by the winds of annihilation.
And the mere sight of a rival (another who loves the beloved or the critic who prevents the lover from their beloved), even from afar, only intensifies my weeping and wailing. Just as the presence of dark clouds in the sky intensifies the rainfall, it is as if they prevent the beloved’s light from appearing.
Lovers try to give the ailing lover of your love a drink or an ointment to heal him, but alas, for every remedy is tainted by the taste of your pain from your love is the cure for all ailments.
And the lover’s bliss and joy are found only in the suffering of love and the sorrow of the beloved. If you are in doubt about this, then you are not among those who have attained this station (the station of true love for the Supreme Beloved).
It is the day of celebration and its perfection, if the Beloved intends to offer sacrifices in this holy day, then, Kamal is the one, from among sacrificers who will offer his soul as a sacrifice to that radiant countenance, also.
Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes
The symbolism of “The Scent of the Shirt”:Kamal Khujandi recalled the story of Joseph and Jacob, peace be upon them. The shirt here is the “manifestation of attributes” through which the knower perceives the reality of divine beauty after the blindness of heedlessness.
The concept of “the line of the sideburns/newly grown hair”: In mysticism, the “line” symbolizes the manifestation of unseen meanings in the world of the seen. And likening it to greenery alludes to the life of hearts and the fragrant blossoms of knowledge that adorn the face of truth.
The philosophy of “pain as medicine” Kamal affirms the “doctrine of love,” where the affliction (the pain of longing) becomes the desired end and true healing lies not in alleviating pain, but in immersing oneself in it to attain the purity of annihilation.
The allegory of “festival and sacrifice”: Sheikh Kamal connects his name “Kamal” (perfection) with the station of “Tamam” (completion) in sacrifice. For Sufis, the festival is the day of meeting the Beloved (God), and the greatest act of obedience on that day is offering oneself as a sacrifice.
A Summary of the Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal believes that all beauty in the universe is an echo of the eternal beauty of the Beloved. Love is a path that begins with a breath of hope and ends at the altar of union. There is no meaning to the lover’s life without pain, and no perfection for the soul except by being an offering on the feast of vision.
