The difference between the Steadfast Knower and the Wavering Pretender

The essence of faith and monotheism lies in absolute steadfastness in the face of trials and in detachment from worldly and otherworldly desires

English Translation

This Ghazal represents “the pinnacle of individualization”; Saadi establishes a precise criterion to distinguish between the “steadfast knower” and the “wavering pretender,” explaining that true monotheism necessitates transcending the dictates of both worlds (this life and the hereafter) so that the Truth, Exalted is He, remains the sole object of desire.

Indeed, those who truly rise to the realm of true monotheism are rare, those who, in a single moment of detachment, elevate themselves above the desires of both worlds (this life and the hereafter), leaving in their hearts no desire other than the Truth, Exalted is He.

The divine jealousy (which accepts no partner in the heart) of love severs the hand of every (superficial) seeker who rushes after the crumbs of pleasure, from approaching the Beloved (God); for he who strives with all his might after the sweetness of worldly gains and rewards is like a fly chasing after pieces of sugar, and in the end, he has neither station nor value in the presence of the Beloved (God).

And the people of truth and the people of the highest Paradise, the calamities of time do not shake their foundations, nor do the shocks of this world scatter their unity. He who is startled and whose heart trembles at the ringing of bells or the clamor of events is but a naive child (a beginner on the Sufi path) on the spiritual ascent.

For how can one, who is tossed about by the lightest breeze of wind (the slightest event in the world, or fleeting conversation), like a dry straw, stand firm like a solid rock in the face of the raging torrents of trials? Because the path to God Almighty requires firm conviction, not flimsy illusions.

And if distance separates you and time delays you from the caravan of those who have reached God Almighty, do not despair, but strive on the path. For the one who lags behind on the path to God may become a forerunner, if he rises up with sincere intention and high aspirations.

O Saadi, clinging to the hem of divine guidance, success, and eternal happiness (in the Hereafter) is a noble task and a great destiny, the one with fickle desires or fleeting whims can’t attain.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

Transcending the Two Worlds (Sir-e Her-Do-Jahan): Saadi refers to the highest station of “detachment”; The gnostic sees that preoccupation with worldly possessions (pleasures) or the afterlife (reward) is a kind of veil from the Almighty, the Beneficent. True monotheism is to worship God for God’s sake alone, not for any other purpose.

The Jealousy of Love (Kashteh Gherat): In Sufism, “jealousy” is a divine attribute meaning that God does not accept that there be any partner (Satan) in the heart of His servant. Those who seek “miracles” or “comfort” are likened by Saadi to flies drawn to sugar; true action requires cutting off the “sleeve” of greed.

Steadfastness in the Face of Torrents (Sangosh): “Steadfastness” is the essence of spiritual practice. Saadi likens the true seeker to a rock in a torrent. For it is trials and tribulations that distinguish between the “straw” that flies with every wind and the “rock” that remains steadfast in principle.

The station of precedence after delay (sabqī gardad): an indication of God’s boundless mercy. The lesson is not in who came first in time, but in who is sincere in their actions. The one who is “late”, through the sincerity of their supplication, may surpass the “ascetic” whose actions have lowered him.

This Sermon means:

That the essence of faith and monotheism lies in absolute steadfastness in the face of trials and in detachment from worldly and otherworldly desires, seeking only the pleasure of the Almighty Creator. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it distinguishes between “love of worldly gains” and “love of the Divine Essence,” affirming that the path is open to every sincere and determined person, no matter how long their journey. Resolve and steadfastness in the face of desires are the only way to attain divine favor and eternal life in the presence of Truth.
