Wisdom only Grows in Silence

English Translation

Your silence transforms your soul into a closed paradise surrounded by a wall, where no distress enters. Your rough clothing (the namd) makes your face shine like ripe fruit.

Sa’ib presents a “method of equivalence” between silence and salvation. Silence is not the absence of speech, but rather a seal that preserves the inner splendor, and outward austerity (namdposhi) is what polishes the soul’s essence to become golden.

Your silent lips will become a perpetual circle of remembrance. If God grants you the ability to forget creation and be preoccupied with Him (God) alone,

Sa’ib connects “detachment from the tangible” with “connection with the Holy,” so silence here is a kinetic act; For it is the lip that remains silent about the world that revolves in the orbit of inner remembrance.

And attachment to houses and possessions on the path of time is like one who casts an anchor into the course of a raging torrent; but detachment (asceticism) is your impregnable fortress.

This is an embodiment of the “philosophy of time as a torrent,” and it is correct to break with convention. He makes “stability” dangerous and “migration” safe, to emphasize that attachment to material things hastens drowning.

Your intelligence (your insight) is what liberates you from the prison of the body (composed of water and clay). But heedlessness renders you inanimate, worthless, like an inscription on a wall.

Here, “the embodiment of meanings” occurs. For Sa’ib, consciousness is a “centrifugal force” that propels humanity from the world of heavy elements into the realm of abstraction.

If you possess an attentive ear, you will find that every bud in this world (the flourishing garden) admonishes you with a hundred tongues, urging you to remain silent.

Here “The anthropomorphization of nature”; the bud represents the “closed mouth,” a fitting symbol of preserved wisdom, and here we see the “paradox of silent speech.”

But you are as oblivious as a thread; you think that embracing the most beautiful is a pleasure, while you reap nothing from it but emaciation and deep pain.

Here, the use of “unusual meaning” is ingenious. He connects “the thinness of a thread” with “the frailty of a lover,” and Sa’ib warns that indulging in sensual pleasures depletes the essence of man and leaves him a fragile “thread.”

So curb your boisterous laughter, as if you were a cup of wine. For time, once you become empty (of meaning or power), will cast you onto the shelf of oblivion.

He connects the clinking of a mina glass (the sound of pouring drink into the glass) with “spiritual emptiness/spiritual void,” and he who makes his outward appearance boisterous while his inner self is empty, his fate is neglect after his glitter fades.

Just as dry thorns increase the intensity of a fire, so too does your wearing of clothes, the roughness (the pretense of asceticism) has increased your ego and its arrogance.

Here is a critique of false asceticism; Sa’ib sees that the materialistic “form” of Sufism can be a greater veil than luxury, because it subtly feeds the ego.

So, awakening (awareness, wise intellect), O Sa’ib, polishes away the rust of heedlessness from the heart. While intoxication makes your heart as black as the center of a poppy flower

The conclusion of “purity”; where Sa’ib prefers “the intoxication of meaning” to “the intoxication of substance,” and the polished heart is the mirror, while (drinking wine) is “rust” that obscures vision

The Sufi and Gnostic Meanings

Here, Sa’ib establishes the “gnosis of detachment”; He believes that wisdom only blossoms in silence, and that “Khanebardushi” is the station of “detachment” which protects the seeker from the torrents of worldly trials. He also warns against “inner vanity” that disguises itself in the garb of ascetics.

Summary of Ghazal

It is “an expression in stillness,” and Sa’ib believes that a person must learn from the bud how to keep its secret. And to escape the “burden of the ego” to become light as if carrying his dwelling on his shoulder (Khanebardoosh) to be saved in the hereafter.
