The Essence of the Lover is more precious than all the treasures of the world

This Ghazal reveals the state of “confusion and annihilation”; Where Kamal weaves together the symbolism of “candle” and “drowning in tears,” affirming that the essence of the lover is higher than all the treasures of the world, and that the heart’s restoration only comes after its ruin in the path of the beloved.

English Translation

O gentle breeze, cease your meddling with the tresses of our Beloved, and do not stir the chains of longing that bind our captive hearts, the lovers (madmen) have no strength left for the rustling of chains.

But instead, tell that Beloved, exceedingly beautiful, to awaken in our souls the dance of ecstasy and the flight of annihilation; for we are like moths that know no life except amidst the flames of His beauty.

For surely, he who thought that all the treasures of King Faridun (a hundred of them) could suffice to buy our unique jewel (our Beloved) is truly lost. The secret of love we carry in our hearts is too vast for the heavens and the earth to contain.

And when the neighbors saw my tears flowing, weeping for my Beloved, they said in bewilderment: “No wonder this raging flood will sweep away our lives and homes with it.”

And though my heart is now desolate from the pangs of sorrow and grief, the radiance of your countenance is enough to transform our ruined dwelling (the hut) into a palace and a garden.

The sweetness of your sleep (O listener to our supplication/or beloved) at dawn will forsake those drowsy eyelids, if only you would listen at night to those cries that our longing utters in the sanctuary of love (immersion in the remembrance of God until morning)

Then, in these nights, Kamal will raise his pains and complaints about those captivating qualities to the beloved; So lend your ear on nights like these to the unending legend of our love (for the Beloved).

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The symbolism of “Chegil’s Candle”: Sheikh Kamal uses this description to refer to the “divine light” to which the mystic is drawn like a moth to a flame. The dance here is the spiritual “listening” that leads to the soul’s departure from the cloak of matter.

The concept of “the unique essence”: Sheikh Kamal indicates that when the human soul connects with divine love, it becomes more precious than “Ganj” (treasure), and this is consistent with the school of the unity of existence, where the knower sees himself as a “copy of Truth” beyond worldly price.

The paradox of “ruin and construction” is a profound Sufi concept; for the heart that has not been broken by “sacred sorrow/grief” cannot contain the Beloved. The ego must crumble (the annihilation of the self) so that Truth may build its edifice (the permanence of Truth) within it.

“The cry of the spirit”: Sheikh Kamal distinguishes between the drink of metaphor and the drink of reality. The ecstasy here is the “ecstasy” or the intimate communion that deprives the “heedless” (those who sleep through the day) of their tranquility, to awaken them to the majesty of the scene.

The Concept of Ghazal

That the lover’s heart is a unique jewel preserved in the glass of affliction. And love, according to Sheikh Kamal, is not stillness, but rather a “flood” that demolishes the familiar to establish truth. The sheikh concludes his ghazal by saying that the tale of the lover with the beloved’s locks of hair (the multiplicity of appearances) is the legend worthy of being recited on nights of union.
