The Ghazal representing the “Constitution of Lovers” and the pinnacle of revelation in the realm of “Sufficient Unity.” In these verses, Saadi transcends the boundaries of direct preaching to draw us into the depths of “spiritual listening,” clarifying that the greatest obstacle between the servant and his Lord is not stone and wood, but rather the hidden “idol of the self.”
There are no periods in the succession of days more radiant or pure than those shaded by the shadows of love. For the dawn of lovers is eternal, connected to the light of eternity, untouched by the gloom of sunset or the sorrow of annihilation.
Even if the strings of the singers fall silent and the chanters depart from their gatherings, the true Sufi remains immersed in his ecstasy and inner hearing; for love is a journey that begins with wonder, but never reaches its final destination.
And every seeker of worldly goals has an end to his pursuit, a point at which he stops, except for those who know God. For the expanse of their longings is a boundless sea, a perfection without limit. Each time they reach a certain point, they realize they are still at the very beginning of their quest.
For among the thousands of ears that hear the melody, the secret of spiritual yearning may penetrate only one heart; because the realities of the unseen and the mysteries of the divine realm are jealous, revealing their hidden depths only to those worthy and close to them.
Only those who know the secrets of the path can discern these meanings. The Divine Presence is a royal court reserved for the elite, and its secrets are not revealed to the common people or to onlookers.
Just as the fragrant aroma of incense (wood sticks) does not emanate except by burning its substance in the heart of the fire, so too do the pearls of truth emerge only from a heart tempered by the fires of striving and trial. And the mature mind (the wise one) knows with certainty that these words are not directed at those whose souls have not yet reached maturity, those who have never tasted the bitterness of longing.
Every lover utters the name of their beloved and confines them to a few letters, but our Beloved… is far too sublime and exalted to be imprisoned by languages or described by attributes. He is beyond depiction, naming, and definition.
And even the graceful cypress tree, with all its beauty and splendor, which lovers sing of, appears frail and insignificant, its stature, before the splendor of Your majesty, at whose sight the lights of existence tremble.
If you seek certain knowledge of the soul’s dissolution and the pangs of sacred longing, then ask me, Saadi. For how can one who has not tasted the bitterness of love’s pain, which is the elixir of lovers, grasp the reality of light or the meaning of annihilation?
For the morning breeze and the dust of Shiraz (Saadi’s city) are not merely material elements, but rather a mystical fire that kindles the hidden depths of yearning. For he who has inhaled the fragrance of the Most High Truth within it will know no taste of stillness, nor will he find rest except in attainment.
For it is your deep sleep at the wrong time (the heedlessness of the heart) that has led you astray from the straight path. Otherwise, the call of the Most High Truth and the cry of dawn have never ceased, and there is no deficiency or tardiness in them.
So, Saadi, after God granted you success in shattering the idols of stone and wood, beware of worshipping the most hardened idol of the ego. For self-worship and seeing oneself as deserving are the most dangerous idols and the most formidable veils between the Creator and the created.
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
The Eternity of Love (Aghaz hast anjam nist): Saadi indicates that divine love is a journey into “infinity.” The beginning is “will,” but the end is nonexistent because the Beloved is limitless.
The Philosophy of Burning (Ta-Nusud…): The oud wood has no value for its fragrance; it is solid and inert. Likewise, the soul’s hidden essence is only revealed by the fire of “struggle” (Ranj), which melts the ego’s harshness.
The Nameless Beloved (Ma’shuq Ma Ra Nam Nist): This refers to the station of “Supreme Unity” where the tongue is incapable of encompassing the Divine Essence. For the gnostics, names are “images” that vanish upon witnessing “the Truth.”
Self-Worship (Khud-Parsti): This is the greatest lesson in love poetry. Sa’di believes that the most dangerous “polytheism” is for the seeker to see his own work or merit as his own. Breaking an external idol is easy, but breaking the “idol of the self” requires the axe of “annihilation.”
This Sermon means:
The perfection of faith and the sincerity of love are only achieved by erasing the traces of selfishness and rising above the self-image before the majesty of the One and Only Beloved. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to understand that the “idol of the ego” is the most formidable veil preventing the continuation of the “dawn of union.” It emphasizes that the maturity of the soul depends on the fires of burning and relinquishing, and that whoever knows that their Beloved has no equal is annihilated from themselves and finds rest from the clamor of pretense.
