English Translation
Saadi takes off the robe of the preacher to put on the rag of the mortal lover. In this text, we find a striking interplay between the majesty of divinity and the humility of servitude, where poverty before God becomes the sole true wealth, and the fires of hell become cool and peaceful before the agony of separation.
In that sacred moment of dawn’s first light, when my eyes are bathed in the radiant glow of Your glory (God), I find myself (Saadi) knocking on the gates of heaven with a gaze of affection and spiritual communion that binds me to You.
For the servant who has tasted the sweetness of humility and dependence upon You, and who has received a share of worldly dominion (as if he were a king with dominion because of his poverty before God and his relinquishment of worldly attachments) through his submission to You, and at Your door, will never bow his head in submission to any earthly throne, even if he gets wordly power.
O God, if You were to decide one day to lift the veil of the unseen and reveal the essence of Your beauty, what wonder and awe would befall the universe? For if all this captivating magic that enthralls hearts (the universe and its magic, God’s creation that steals hearts) flows from behind this veil, what would be the state of those who witness (God) directly (without the veil)?
So be gracious, O God, and cast a merciful glance from Your side upon the ranks of yearning lovers, so that the dark nights of those, who tread the path of truth, may be transformed into radiant light by the abundance of Your radiance.
For all creation raises the books of their deeds to the door of Your majesty, seeking recompense, but we… we have nothing to offer but tales of our poverty, our brokenness, and our perpetual need for You.
And the obedience of the people to any earthly king will never be complete unless that king first places his head on the dust of servitude, submitting to Your eternal dominion.
If You decree that I should be cast out of Your protection, then it would be better for Your servant to be thrown into the depths of Hell. Perhaps the flames of the fire will extinguish some of the heat of my tears, which I shed burning with the pain of Your parting from me.
O Saadi, you will never reach the station of true detachment (detachment and freedom from worldly appearances and desires) nor the path of annihilation in the Beloved (God), as long as you are impressed by the dignity of your old age or boastful of your asceticism and piety.
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
Knocking on the Door of Heaven Through Acquaintance (The Circle of Acquaintance): Saadi refers to the covenant of “Am I not your Lord?” The mystic does not approach God as a stranger, but as an “Ashna” (an ancient and familiar one), relying on the eternal love that preceded the existence of bodies (the world of spirits).
The Sultanate of Poverty (Gadai): Saadi reiterates his central idea that neediness of God is the ultimate richness. Whoever becomes “the poor of God” becomes a master of causes, and does not bow down to any earthly king because his heart is filled with “the Enricher/God alone.”
The Veil of Beauty (Purdeh): In mysticism, the entire world is a “veil” over the beauty of God Almighty, and the beauty we see in images is a “drift” from behind the veil. Saadi believes that unveiling the veil (self-manifestation) leads to the annihilation of the universe (a great tribulation).
The Worship of Love, Not the Worship of Deeds: Saadi distinguishes between two types of religious people: “those of action” who offer their deeds as the price of Paradise, and “those of love” who see no work in themselves, but rather offer “nothingness” and neediness as the commodity for acceptance by God Almighty.
The Paradox of Hell and Separation: This image is one of the most powerful images of ecstasy; The lover sees the torment of hellfire as easier to bear than the agony of separation from the beloved, and the tears shed in anguish are hotter than the flames of hell, to the point that they might even extinguish its fire.
The Idol of Piety (Khiyal-e Parsai): Saadi concludes with a subtle, esoteric critique; This means that the seeker’s perception of their own piety is a form of ego, while true detachment lies in the seeker on the path of truth (the Sufi) forgetting even their own asceticism, so that only God remains reflected in the mirror of their heart.
This Sermon means
The perfection of servitude lies in the annihilation of self-perception and the transcendence of worldly and otherworldly desires, yearning only for the face of the Beloved. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it elevates the dignity of humility before God and warns against the veils of self-admiration in piety, eloquently affirming that the pain of separation from the Truth is the greatest hell, before which the fires of the Hereafter pale in comparison. The true knower is the one who makes their brokenness their sole means of knocking on the gates of Heaven.
