English Translation
Precious, precious, by Allah, you are so precious!
You are the dearest of people and the closest to my heart, indeed, the very first among them;
And if my eyes do not behold you, this entire universe becomes utterly empty!
Precious, by Allah, you are so precious!
My state, my state, by Allah, my condition
In your presence,
its days become filled with happiness, and your phantom is the very light of its dreams.
May I never be deprived of you, and may you remain mine for a lifetime!
I can never be independent of you or your love; my entire life is lived in your warm proximity.
And no matter how my days pass by, my mind is never occupied by anyone but you!
Precious, precious, by Allah, you are so precious!
Explaining:
Ghali, wallahi ghali (Dear, truly dear): An explicit oath (“by God”) emphasizing the beloved’s unique spiritual value and exalted status, through both good times and bad.
Idha ma shafat-ka ‘ayni yasir al-kawnu dha khali (If my eyes do not see you, the universe becomes empty): A metaphor embodying spiritual estrangement; the vast universe—teeming with life—transforms into a desolate wasteland and a silent void in the absence of the beloved’s radiant presence.
Tayfuka dhi’u ahlamih (Your apparition is the light of his dreams): A simile likening the apparition to light; the beloved’s image does not merely visit sleep as a fleeting phantom but dispels the darkness of night, bathing dreams in brilliance and radiance.
Asani ma anharim mink (May I never be deprived of you): An endearing Najdi and Gulf expression—a prayer pulsating with loyalty and a perpetual wish for enduring union, seeking to avoid the anguish of loss.
Ma li ghina ‘anka wa ‘an hubbik (I cannot do without you or your love): A play on possession and necessity; it asserts that while one might find contentment and independence from the rest of the world, such detachment is impossible regarding the beloved—the very essence of existence and the secret of life itself.
Bi-ghayrika ma anshaghil bali (My mind is occupied by no one but you): A declaration of total emotional devotion; focusing one’s thoughts and memories exclusively on the beloved, to the exclusion of all others.
The song “Ghali” presents a philosophy of joy and absolute emotional fulfillment. It is a symphony proclaiming that closeness is home—the soul’s only antidote—and that the sight of the beloved’s face is what grants the universe its meaning and vibrant colors.
