Explaining:
رحال: An intensive form on the pattern of (fa`aal) meaning one who travels and journeys frequently. This journeying is not geographical, a search for a new homeland, but rather an “internal journey,” an escape from the pangs of pain and the alienation of a soul that has found no rest.
بين الموانئ بالأماني: “Ports” are temporary stops for ships and travelers, and their use here illustrates that the lover lives in a state of perpetual “transit zones,” nourishing his soul with fleeting hopes and promises instead of true arrival.
بلا فرحة ولا موال: “Mawwal” in Arabic song is the poignant, sorrowful melody with which the traveler consoles himself in his exile. Its absence signifies that the traveler has lost even his voice and his ability to weep and sing plaintive songs, entering a state of profound silence.
بتعب القلوب: A striking metaphorical image; the distances of roads and paths are not measured in kilometers, but rather by the degree of exhaustion and emotional pain endured by the traveling heart.
رحال العمر: The merging of movement with time; Life itself slips away, a constant journey, without a single moment of rest.
ولا لي إلا الليالي تحضني: a tender, sorrowful image; where humanity and human embraces vanish, leaving the dark night, with its stillness and moonlight, as the only refuge, the final solace for the weary lover.
خليني ناري تصبح رماد: the pinnacle of mystical annihilation and spiritual peace (salvation); the “fire” here is the burning fire of longing and tormented yearning, and the wish to transform it into cool, still “ashes” is a plea for tranquility and liberation from the shackles of this burning, agonizing love.
This song presents the tragedy of wandering and emotional exile. Abadi Al-Johar isn’t speaking here of parting from a specific person, but rather of an “existential alienation,” where the lover becomes a stranger in his own world, condemned to eternal wandering between paths and ports without purpose or destination. The mystical dimension is manifested in the profound desire for “extinction and ashes” (“Let my fire become ashes”); for ashes are a symbol of absolute surrender and the end that follows complete burning by the fire of longing and spiritual yearning. Night becomes the sole refuge for a body exhausted by “the weariness of hearts” and scattered by “a wandering life.”
