Attachment to the Beloved on the Day of Judgment is the only salvation for Lovers

This Ghazal represents the pinnacle of “eternal love” that transcends time; for it perfectly encapsulates, through its mystical insight, how the heart regains its youth through love for the Supreme Beloved, surpassing the limits of matter to seek salvation in the threads of truth.

English Translation

Thanks to divine love, the passage of time within us (our hearts or our guides) remains eternally youthful. May God never empty our hearts of love for those beauties that reflect the beauty of the Creator.

Although the lover’s life is like a lamp (an oil lamp or a candle), soon to be extinguished near dawn, our detractors (those who envied us and wished us death), who hastened our demise, have been granted a long life (to witness our happy ending) to see the steadfastness of our hearts.

Indeed, our Beloved takes a hundred of our souls in exchange for a promise of a single kiss of contentment; how excessive in requests our beloved is He, Who gives so much trials, yet is little in acceptance and connection!

This heart cannot bear to think of anything else than our Beloved, not even by an atom’s weight. Our enlightened conscience overflows with the light of His love alone.

How long will I continue to plead for union with the One with the arched eyebrows, while the arrows of my supplication have yet to find their mark in granting my request?

Just as there is no escape for the soul from the body, nor for the body from the soul, do not separate from us again, O You who are for our souls the inevitable destiny.

For our only solace is a little patience and a longing beyond measure, and You are the All-Knowing of all our shortcomings and perfections, of our few and our many.

So, O Kamal, do not worry about sins, as long as the Beloved (we are attached to the strands of His hair) is the intercessor and the one who will guide us to salvation on the Day of Resurrection.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The Station of “Youth in Old Age”: Kamal Khujandi affirms that the gnostic, no matter how long he lives, remains “Jawaan” (youthful). With his spirit, for love renews the breath. This aligns with Kamal’s vision that “his companionship was more beautiful than his poetry” due to its spiritual vitality.

The symbolism of “the knot of closeness”: The “zulf” (the lock of attributes) in Sufism symbolizes the “multiplicity of attributes” that veil the self but ultimately lead to it. Adherence to this covenant on the Day of Judgment means that love for Divine Beauty is the certificate of forgiveness that erases all sin.

The Philosophy of “Nagizir” (Spiritual Compulsion): Kamal points to the unity of attachment between the servant and the Lord; just as the body cannot live without the soul, the knower has no existence without witnessing his Beloved. It is a necessity that completely negates “otherness.”

The allusion to “perfection” in the passage: As is his custom, he concludes with his name to indicate that even sins that may appear as shortcomings will find salvation in the perfection of the beloved’s forgiveness and concealment.

    Summary of Ghazal

In this Ghazal, Sheikh Kamal Khujandi presents a lesson in “sincerity of intention.” Love is the driving force that protects the heart from aging and negligence. Although the path to union is arduous (arrows that miss their mark), absolute devotion to the Beloved transforms every pain into beauty, and makes the Day of Reckoning a day of peace, thanks to that sacred bond.
