True son of Adam lies in their essence, not in their glittering appearance

In this Ghazal, Saadi weighs “humanity” in terms of essence rather than appearance, moving from a critique of worldly heedlessness to a philosophy of awakening after death, concluding with a fundamental human principle: the sanctity of not harming hearts.

English Translation

Not every living being possesses true humanity. How many people roam this earth, yet in their essence are nothing but faded inscriptions on a wall, devoid of true life, images empty of meaning and spirit?

For base silver plated with counterfeit gold, when subjected to the crucible of testing (fire), reveals its falseness, and its true nature is exposed, contrary to what the common people imagined from its outward brilliance.

And there are people whom you may see with your limited eye as having no value or worth, while in reality they are with insight and those who possess true knowledge are of high standing and great rank.

As our brothers who lie in the grave (under the ground) do not possess tongues for physical speech, so be an attentive ear to their condition, for they overflow with wisdom and admonitions for those with awakened hearts (reflecting on death).

So beware of strutting arrogantly and boastfully upon the face of this land, and know that beneath your feet lie countless multitudes who once walked with the same pride (like you), before fate folded them beneath the dust.

They wasted their lives in the slumber of heedlessness and the pursuit of pleasure and lust, and the wonder is that now—as they lie dormant beneath layers of ground (inside their graves)—they have truly awakened to witness the truth that their senses had overlooked when they lived in this world

Who will accept their excuses (what excuse will they offer to the Creator) when it is too late in this life? And how can a seed sown in the twilight of life and out of season ever reach harvest time and become fruitful ears of grain?

I wish if I had a thousand precious souls to sacrifice as a ransom for the masters of insight and the possessors of true vision (the knowers), those who have elevated themselves with their aspirations, so that they have given no weight to the prestige of this world or its fleeting possessions in the scales of truth (they have forsaken them and paid them no heed).

For who is not seduced and deceived by this dominion and power in this transient world? While destiny drives all creation to depart from it (inevitable death), leaving its possession to the generations that follow them.

So do not give free rein to greed and the pursuit of worldly things, as the whims (passions) of this world, will never be filled except by the dust of the grave when it is heaped upon the heads (the repositories of psychological desires, never filled except with dust, after death)

And I (Saadi) am not one of those who raise a hand in supplication against the wicked. How wretched they are! In truth, they are truly miserable, shackled by their own vile natures and enslaved by their own evil intentions.

So, Saadi, be certain, and I adjure you by the souls of the righteous, those with sincere and living hearts (in the sight of God), that you know that the entire kingdom of existence is worth nothing to God compared to harming a soul or breaking the heart of a living being.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Inscription and Humanity (Divar Inscription/Wall Painting): For Saadi, humanity is not a physical form, but rather a character trait and attribute. With attributes of perfection. “The wall’s engraving” is a metaphor for the “materialistic” person who lives without heart or insight, thus being no different from inanimate objects.

The crucible of testing (the crucible): The goldsmith’s crucible represents the trials and tribulations on the path. The mystic believes that trials reveal the essence of truth from the falsehood of pretense.

Awakening after death: A reference to the hadith: “People are asleep, and when they die, they awaken.” Mystics see this world as a place of “dreams,” and the hereafter as the true awakening to witness the seats of truth.

Prisoners of bad character: A profound Sufi vision of evil. The wicked one is not strong, but rather a “poor soul” afflicted by his own wickedness, and his evil character is his prison and his immediate hell in this world.

The sanctity of hearts: Saadi concludes with “the deification of humanity.” The heart is the throne of the Most Merciful, and harming it is the destruction of the spiritual kingdom of existence.

This Sermon means:

That a person’s honor is contingent upon the awakening of their soul and the nobility of their character, not upon the glitter of their outward appearance or the loftiness of their position. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it purifies the heart from the arrogance of heedlessness and guides the seeker to see the Creator’s magnificence in the admonitions of the deceased, affirming that insight is the true measure of men, and that gentleness towards creation and refraining from harming hearts is the only price for attaining acceptance in the kingdom of existence.
