This Ghazal represents “the alchemy of the soul,” where Sheikh Saadi masterfully connects enduring patience with profound transformation, demonstrating that when love seizes the kingdom of the heart, it overturns the scales of reason.
English Translation
The true pleasure of the drink lies in intimacy with the beloved. When that connection is achieved, a renewed thought and a unique experience, unlike anything before, will dawn upon you each morning.
The root of righteousness, perseverance, and genuine striving on the path of the Beloved will inevitably sprout into a flourishing tree. The branch of spiritual vigilance and consistent obedience will surely bear fruit when the time of harvest arrives (the Hereafter/the Day of Reckoning).
The one who knows the sciences of spiritual alchemy (or physical alchemy) needs to expend much silver (melting the ego and striving against the self) and bury it in the somber dust of humility until the pure gold of certainty is revealed within.
And this requires a beautiful and enduring patience, until the Physician of Hearts (the Truth, Glory be to Him) graciously passes one day through the alley of the afflicted and suffering ones, who are yearning for Him, and heals them with a merciful glance.
And that superficial world (People who blame and criticize those who tread the path of the Truth, the Exalted) who rebukes the knowers, saying, “Avert your eyes from seeing beauty,”, if his gaze were to fall for even a single moment upon the features of our Beloved, he himself would become a possessor of insight and witness, and he would cease directing blame and criticism at them.
For that is because the greatest power (love), when it seizes the kingdom of the heart, the first thing it does to the seeker is to turn the scales of the old judgment (the calculating and logical mind) upside down, to establish within it a sultanate specific to lovers.
And if you admonish the madman (who has acquired a sultanate of love specific to him) to awaken and return to his reason and logical wisdom, there is a real fear that your advice will increase his madness and infatuation, for the lover, reproach only intensifies his passion.
When the dawn breaks and the dervish awakens from his trance with the beloved, hasten to give him a large cup of the wine of longing, until he returns to his complete and beautiful oblivion, detached from all else (this world).
O Cupbearer of the soul (Beloved), share your cup with us, and O Singer of souls (Beloved), recite poetry, press your lips to the flute, and play the song of union, until the dry wood transforms into sugarcane flowing with sweetness, by your sacred command.
Today, Saadi’s words may not seem as sweet to you now, but tomorrow they will become the talk of travelers, a legend told like the immortal story of Shirin (Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh).
Contextual and Mystical Marginal Notes (Cultural/Sufi Context)
Renewal of Tastes (Zoqi-ye Degar): Saadi refers to the manifestation of the divine names; God is ever-active, and thus the sincere seeker receives a new breath of knowledge each morning, unlike any before it
The Alchemy of Striving (Ostad-e Kimya): A striking metaphor; silver (Sim) symbolizes the servant’s deeds and humility, and dark earth symbolizes modesty. For copper to become gold, it must be “buried” in the fires of spiritual struggle. Annihilation of physical attributes is a condition for remaining with divine attributes.
Overturning the scales (Zir and Zabar): An allusion to annihilation (Fana). When the “King” (the Light of God) enters the “spot” (the heart), he demolishes the “structure of governance” (personal will and rational logic) to replace it with the “Divine Will.” Two rulers cannot coexist in the heart.
The intoxication of magic (Bi-Khabar): “Khabar” is awareness of creation, and “la-Khabar” is absorption in the Truth. The dervish escapes from his sensory awareness (which returns him to the world with the dawn) into spiritual intoxication to remain with the Beloved.
Sugar flute (Nishkar): A play on words between “Ni” (flute) and “Nishkar” (sugarcane). The flute moans due to separation, but when touched by the beloved’s mouth, it becomes a source of sweetness and union
This Sermon Means
Reaching the stations of certainty and beauty requires patience surpassing that of alchemists and an inner transformation that overturns the scales of reason to establish the dominion of ecstasy. It is important in spiritual and emotional education because it guides the seeker to the station of “fruitful uprightness” and clarifies that the sweetness of remembrance is only attained by souls that have accepted the destruction of the structure of their ego so that the dominion of Truth may take its place. It affirms that for one immersed in the beauty of God, blame only increases their yearning.
