English Translation

At the very edge of the earth,

At the very edge of the earth,

I feel that the distance is but a mere span,

and the dreams of the nights are but patience,

while the entire earth is too small to bear the exhaustion of this journey.

I feel that despite my smallness—having only seconds of a lifetime within my chest.

A colossal, giant regret dwells inside me, here at the very edge of the earth.

I once imagined you as the sorrow of people,

their tears, and their resentment;

I imagined that in your eyes, people betray you, and you betray them.

Yet, I know not why I imagined you so.

There is a vast crowd… like a beauty mark of the night upon the cheek of the blue sky,

where some are descending, and others are ascending.

And someone like you, in the midst of all these people,

carefully hides a giant, overwhelming pain away from their eyes.

If only your eyes had never been my homeland and earth,

and if only I had never stood, in all my life, at the very edge of the earth.

Who but you fears the wetness and the mud?

Feeling that the dry ground is harsh, and the rain is a painful knife.

The nights passed over me lightly, exceeding my numbered years,

and I realized then that the horizon is limited,

and that the night is neither your hair, nor your eyelashes, nor the moon on your cheeks.

I realized my utter failure to possess anything,

even if my only worry was my own bleeding wounds. Indeed, the world cannot be truly seen,

while you and I are standing… on the very edge of the precipice (on the Mihyaf).

Explaining:

الميهاف: a very high, towering place, and the prominent rocks on the coast against which the waves break. The word is used poetically to symbolize the “edge of emotions” and standing at a critical liminal point between infatuation and oblivion.

آخر تراب الأرض: the dividing line between tangible, physical existence and the infinite (the sea or space); it is a metaphor for traversing the furthest distances of emotional journey to reach the beloved.

المسافة شبر وأحلام الليالي صبر: a wondrous visual and emotional intensification; the distance separating hearts seems very close, like a span, but crossing it spiritually requires a lifetime of patience and waiting.

شامة ليل على خد السماء الزرقاء: an artistic simile of exceptional brilliance and beauty; where the bright stars scattered in the dome of the dark night sky are likened to “luminous beauty marks” adorning the cheek of a beautiful blue-eyed woman.

يداري عن عيون الناس ألم جبار: concealing great human suffering. This image intersects with the silence of pride and restraint we find in other masterpieces like “The Sincerity of Loyalty.”

“من مثلك يخاف من البلل والطين / يحس إن المطر سكين?” This image describes the beloved’s extreme sensitivity and aristocratic chastity. She is a being of utmost delicacy and purity, unable to bear the harshness of the earth (“wetness and mud”). Even the warm rain—which people welcome—feels like the blades of knives wounding her tenderness.

“الدنيا ما تنشاف وأنا وأنتِ على الميهاف”: This reflects the realization of the inability to comprehend the universe. Standing on the edge of the towering precipice gives lovers a feeling of dizziness and awe, causing the details and trivialities of the world to fade before the grandeur of their encounter and the majesty of standing together on the edge of destiny.

The song “On the Precipice” presents the philosophy of standing on the edge of emotional annihilation and the absolute sensitivity of the beloved.

The lover openly declares his inability to possess his emotional lifeblood and the narrowness of the world around him (“I knew that the horizon is limited”). The beloved emerges here as a celestial being of exquisite delicacy and transcendence, unable to bear the harshness of earthly reality (“dampness and mud”) and fearing even the dewy rain. This makes meeting her on the “Mihav” (the edge of the cliff overlooking infinity) a majestic encounter outside the bounds of time and beyond human comprehension and possession, leaving the entire world hidden from view in the presence of this sublime emotional wonder.
