The scent of roses is like rough thorns on your garment, so delicate is your nature; how dare I, powerless as I am, touch the hem of your robe with my hand?
The scent of roses is so delicate that it feels like rough thorns on your garment; how dare I, powerless as I am, touch the hem of your robe with my hand? Here is an embodiment of “the eloquence of delicacy,” where Saïb uses “breaking the norm” to show that the beloved is such a delicate being that transparent meanings (like perfume) offend him, making the approach of the material lover impossible.
For it is the mirror that reveals the sun’s rays (by reflecting them); How could your radiant heart remain hidden from sight when its light overflows into all existence?
The station of “Unity of Witnessing,” where Sa’ib sees that “the Truth” cannot be concealed, because every atom in the universe acts as a mirror reflecting that divine light. Thus, the manifestation here is essential and intrinsic, not accidental.
And the hem of your garment has been sufficiently saturated with the blood of lovers, to such an extent that if I were to touch it, a stream of blood would burst forth between my hands.
Saib invents a “biganeh/strange meaning” by associating quenching thirst with blood instead of water, portraying the beloved as a hunter, so beautiful that he shows no mercy, where sacrifice becomes a material adornment that drowns whoever approaches him.
So what can the sighs of the oppressed do? By You, O Oppressor, the tyrant in his oppression (the beloved as an oppressor, due to the intensity of his beauty)? And you wear a shield and armor, because of your hardened heart, beneath your clothes.
“The embodiment of meanings,” where the poet transforms moral cruelty into a physical “armor” (iron shield), to prove that the Beloved is in a state of “self-sufficiency” from lovers, and the arrows of complaint cannot penetrate Him.
O You who possess the beauty of Joseph, the fragrance of Your garment has melted into the light of Your silvery body. (A very beautiful body, shining like silver), so much so that even perfume is unable to escape the collar of your clothes.
The paradox of “erasure,” so Saïb reverses the story of Joseph; If the fragrance of Joseph reached Canaan, then the beauty of this beloved consumed the fragrance itself, for nothing surpasses the reality of the luminous body.
No one can withstand the warning cry to stay away, because of the intensity of your allure. Even the sun’s rays are turned away in disappointment when they try to enter through your window.
The majesty of beauty, in the presence of the righteous, is not merely gentle coquetry, but a “repelling force” that protects the divine sanctuary even from the noblest of creatures, such as the sun.
And you have blocked the path of supplication before the needy because of your pride. Even the ant returns from your threshing floor with its mouth sealed, unable to carry a single grain.
The station of “preventive greatness” indicates that divine bounty, despite its abundance (harman/baydar), leaves the servant speechless (baste dahan/muqamm), for generosity here transcends the capacity of human inquiry.
And kissing your hair stains the hand with colors (Henna); because your neck is stained with the blood of the innocent, killed by your beauty.
Transforming “crime” into “art,” where Saïb employs the “method of equivalence” to make blood (death) a substitute for henna (adornment), asserting that every touch of the beloved is a testimony imbued with love.
And it is very difficult to tame the lightning that burns the world; How could Sa’ib possibly prevent you from leaving by using his spells and the magic of his words?
In the conclusion of “human impotence,” Sa’ib likens the beloved to lightning—a symbol of swift and devastating manifestation—declaring that the poetic “self” has no power over the divine will.
Mystical and Gnostic Meanings
In this Ghazal, Sa’ib establishes the “station of divine majesty.” He sees that God Almighty is “self-sufficient” and indifferent to the longing and complaints of lovers, and the hardened heart (like a shield) is a symbol of the unyielding will, unaffected by human desires. Similarly, the “destructive lightning” refers to the moment of “annihilation” that consumes the metaphorical existence of the lover.
The Ghazal is a “song of awe,” where Sa’ib portrays the beloved as a “sultan.” “Nurani” (Luminous) denies even the sun and the ant their desires to uphold its holiness. Love here is not a leisurely stroll, but an “aesthetic massacre” that transforms blood into henna, and makes silence (painting) the only possible response to the “lightning” of truth.
