English Translation
You are the ecstasy of my passion, my vast sanctuary, and my ultimate hope.
And you have been the very foundation of my love since ancient times.
From you, my beloved, I can never bear any estrangement or anger;
In both your pleasure and your gentle reproach, my heart has grown beautifully lovesick.
Within the eyelashes of love, the arrow of your gaze has slain me;
Because of my lofty aspirations and devotion, I have no power to ever depart.
I stay awake all night long when everyone else is fast asleep and heedless,
communing in perfect harmony with your beautiful image, and my spiritual peace is sublime.
My passion has taken hold of me, yet my wishes remain unfulfilled,
while the fire of your love burns brightly like a glowing flame within my innermost soul.
She is of a graceful, swaying stature, and of a slender waist,
with long, dark, and silky hair cascading abundantly over her shoulders.
I yield generously to the rain-clouds of your favor, with contentment and devotion;
I hold my entire lifetime cheap for your sake, and gladly achieve the impossible.
My only quest is to attain your sweet pleasure, if any hope still remains;
Answer me, therefore, in your reply, O healing cure of my lovesick heart.
Explaining:
نشوة غرامي: “Ecstasy” is the pinnacle of contentment, joy, and spiritual rapture in love; it is a state that transcends reason to enter the realm of pure ecstasy.
الرحب: Spaciousness and security; meaning that the beloved is the vast refuge and homeland to which the lover’s soul flees from the narrowness of the world.
ساس المحبة: “Foundation” is the deep structural basis and firmly rooted roots; the expression clarifies that this love is not born of the moment but is an authentic covenant whose roots run deep in time.
في رموش المحبة سهم عينك قتل: A classic Arabic love image; where the gaze of wide eyes and thick eyelashes is likened to deadly arrows that pierce the lover’s heart and steal his will.
يوم كلٍ ذهل: “Oblivated” in colloquial Arabic means to be oblivious or to fall into a deep sleep; that is, at the time when all people are asleep and oblivious to love, the lover remains alone and awake.
إرتياحي جليل: “Sublime” means great and awe-inspiring; He describes the sublime spiritual pleasure a lover feels while conversing with the image of his beloved in the stillness of the night.
تتقد نار حبك في الضمير شعيل: “Heart” refers to the innermost part of the soul and the depths of the heart; “burning” is the blazing flame. The image expresses the burning fire of passion that illuminates his innermost being.
مايس القد عوده: “Figure” refers to her stature and body, and “swaying gracefully” is a metaphor for a slender, graceful figure.
الهضيم; this is one of the most eloquent descriptions of feminine beauty in classical Arabic poetry.
من سليلٍ تحدر فوق متنه شليل: “Flowing stream” refers to long, flowing hair like water, “shoulder” refers to the shoulders, and “flowing” refers to hair that flows abundantly and profusely. The image embodies the beauty of the beloved’s long, black hair, cascading down her shoulders like a warm night waterfall.
“أستخي للمخايل”: “I am generous” here signifies extreme generosity and bounty, and “the clouds” are the rain clouds; the meaning is: “I am generous with my life and soul, and I will do the impossible, hoping for the rain of your union and your favor.”
This song represents a majestic celebration of chaste beauty and spiritual devotion. The lover here does not complain about the harshness of fate, but rather finds sweetness in the pain and sleeplessness for the sake of his beloved (“In your favor and your reproach, my heart has become ailing”). The poem reaches the pinnacle of aesthetic appreciation in the verses that describe the beloved’s captivating figure and her long hair flowing like a waterfall over her shoulders (“Above her back, a cascade”) with dignity and modesty. It is a love that sees the beloved as “refuge, spaciousness, and hope,” and shows a complete readiness to do the impossible and sacrifice one’s entire life to gain her favor and drink from the sweetness of her reply.
